Sargood2009UpdateFor a number of years, Spinal Cord Injuries Australia (SCIA) has had a goal to create an innovative transitional accommodation and respite service at Collaroy: the Sargood Centre.  While much work has been completed in the development of the plans, approval of the Development Application with Warringah Council and development of the service delivery components within the service, delays have been experienced in fundraising to construct the centre.

Over recent months, discussions have been held with a range of stakeholders to examine ways in which the Sargood Centre could become a reality as soon as possible. On the 17th of July an Extraordinary General Meeting of the organisation was held to examine a proposal to progress these partnerships.  Members of the organisation voted overwhelmingly in favour of the proposal to proceed with arrangements to sell the land at 1 Brissenden Avenue, Collaroy to the Lifetime Care and Support Authority.

We will now be moving as quickly as possible to put in place the legal and other arrangements to ensure that the Sargood Centre becomes a reality, without further delay.  It is expected that the Centre will begin operating under SCIA management from early 2011.

This is a significant development on our organisation’s history, and will ensure that people who have access to the Centre can maximize their ability to be masters of their own destiny, rather than recipients of care.
